Two Xbox exclusives worth attention this year are Avowed and South Of Midnight. While South Of Midnight is set to release on April 8, the previews of the title are already live.
From the previews, we have concluded that Compulsion Games did a phenomenal job creating a worthwhile action-adventure journey of Hezel, the protagonist, in Deep South America. As per the Art Director Whitney Clayton via Gamesradar, South of Midnight has a relatively short playtime of 10-12 hours and 14 chapters of a folktale.
Unlike Starfield, South of Midnight follows the norms and runs 60 FPS on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
The game’s pace is slow, and the immersive world is handcrafted with a gorgeous art style, which makes it stunning. Meanwhile, the exploration and puzzle-solving have made this short action-adventure journey memorable.
For exploration, the traversal is very fluid, with the use of gliding, double jumps, and platforming sections. The world has mystical southern elements and stunning visually created locales, further enhancing the exploration.
While the combat is not really appealing and is considered mediocre because of repetitive mechanisms, the magical powers called weaver ability and creatively created creatures in the form of bosses make the combat a supportive element of the game.
The plot is based on Hezel’s search for her mother. It features Deep South American folklore with personal themes, creating engaging characters and a linear, immersive story of 10-12 hours.
Given that it is a preview build, it has performance issues like Screen tearing and hitches, but they will be fixed by release. Other than that, it is well-optimized. There are no other big issues.
That said, it is a solid addition to the action-adventure genre, as it balances each element, and the stunning visuals and art make it unique and stand out in the genre.
