Ninja Theory, the developer behind Hellblade 2, shared their views on using AI in the game’s development. In a podcast with Phil Spencer in the announcement of the Microsoft generative AI model Muse, Dom Matthews said that they are really interested in this technology because it helps our team to do more.
The developer excluded any assumption about the use of AI in content creation in games, saying that we hadn’t used AI to generate content and will not use it in the future. However, he is interested in using AI to streamline things and accelerate the whole process of game development. This includes quick idea generation and quicker iterations, allowing the productivity of the creators to go live quicker than ever.
“It’s not about using AI to generate content, but it’s actually about creating workflows and approaches that allow our team here of 100 creative experts to do more, to go further, to iterate quicker, to ideate quicker, to bring the ideas in their heads to life in a tangible form for others to see.”

Meanwhile, the developer also highlighted the role of human creativity in game development. He said that games are the real creators, as creators use this medium to talk to their audiences and interact with them.
“Games to me are really creators using the medium of games to talk to their audience, to communicate through the medium of interactivity, and that is core to game creation for me.”
Hence, generative AI is a tool for creators, empowering them to push their own boundaries and quickly turn a dream into reality.
That said, AI is already becoming a necessity in game development. It has already been implemented in various aspects of gaming development, such as creating immersive gameplay behavior, as various developers use AI to create NPC behaviors.
Meanwhile, the technology is also used in the QA and testing phase of game development as AI helps developers detect technical issues like glitches, bugs, and other issues in the title.
Hence, AI makes many things quicker and easier. However, the use of generative AI in content creation is unacceptable, given that it handicaps creativity in games, makes cheap games, and also causes job issues for developers, producing negative effects on the industry.
All in all, the Microsoft generative AI model Muse can have a major effect on the production capacity of Xbox first-party studios’ games.
