Crux Of The Story
- Helldivers 2 Creative Director expressed his thoughts on DEI inclusion in games.
- As per the director, developers should pursue amazing moments in games if DEI is forced, it will detract from the title.
- Forced DEI has been one of the major contributors to the latest titles failures’ such as Concord and others.
DEI is one of the biggest discourses in the current gaming landscape. While there are already many opinions on the topic by different developers, an interesting add-up as come recently. The developer of one of the most successful titles of 2024 Helldivers, expressed his opinions on the debate.
According to Johan Pilestedt, the creative director of Helldivers 2 DEI Inclusion is only viable if it enhances the experience of a game.
The director commented on this topic when he posted on X and asked players about their expectations for the upcoming Arrowhead title, given Helldivers 2 made an incredible reputation for the studio’s skills in developing titles. He also made intriguing information about the next title, which is a high-concept title.
As DEI inclusion has faced hatred from gamers, one responds by saying never add DEI to games, and to this comment, the director gets the chance to express his views on the topic.
As per the Developer, DEI can detract from a game if it does not augment the experience. Developers should always look for amazing moments. Meanwhile, the developer does not believe in political views what he believes in is only making games worth fans’ time.
That said, the director faced mixed thoughts on his response. Some contradicted this, as they believe Helldivers 2 itself has political themes, while others believe that there is forced inclusion of DEI in the industry and appreciated the thoughts of the developer.
Reflecting on the causes of the failures of games, one of the reasons that came into existence is the forced DEI inclusion, which detracts from a game, as we have seen Concord’s worse character design because of such issues. So, Pilestedt’s opinions seem rational as forcing things spoils the natural direction of a title.
