As we progress towards the new era, the physical version of consoles is becoming obsolete. This move was first introduced by Xbox; hence, people are expecting that every new console will be digital only.
However, today, we have discovered something that is really astonishing. Shawn Layden, the former Playstation boss, says that Sony will not skip the PS6 disk version. This leads to many questions as the PS5 Pro is digital only, and Xbox rumoured upcoming next-gen console is also said to be digital only.
Moreover, many studios, including Game science’ Black Myth Wukong, which was initially launched digital only and later got physical release , Focus Entertainment’ Space Marine 2, and others, are switching to digital-only games, ditching physical copies.
However, Shawn Layden provides justification points as to why PlayStation will not end up going digital only. He said that military bases don’t have access to the internet and hence can’t access a digital release. Moreover, there are also rural areas that don’t have enough internet speed to download digital games.
Furthermore, Shawn Layden believes that Xbox’s success in the digital-only strategy is due to the console’s popularity in a crunch of countries including US, Canada, UK, and others with internet access.
However, PlayStation has a wide market presence, given that the console is highly dominating its competitor, Xbox. In the US and Europe, PlayStation always sells better. Moreover, PlayStation is no 1 platform in 170 countries.
It is possible that Sony could provide different variants of PS6, some digital-only, and some hybrid, allowing for physical disks as well. That said, we should take this as speculation from the former boss and wait for the official statements.
Nonetheless, we already reported some other rumoured details about PS6, including that the console will be based on RDNA 4 successor which has been rebranded as UDNA.
Moreover, it is also rumored to be released in 2027. However, we should wait for the announcement to get the official console details.
