We got the US sales figures for the leading consoles, including Xbox Serries X/S and PS5. These figures came from Mat Piscatella via Circana. Over the 50-month cycle of these consoles, we got interesting results when compared with the last-gen versions of this hardware.
In these 50 months, PS5 sales have been 7% higher than those of the predecessor, PS4. So, clearly, the PS5 proves to be the console that Sony sells better than the PS4. Meanwhile, the results are disappointing for Xbox. In the same timeline, Xbox Series S/X sales lag behind Xbox one by 18%.
Moreover, if we trim down the timespan to 38 months, PS5 sales were 6% more than PS4, whereas Xbox Series lags behind Xbox one by 13%.
Furthermore, the year 2024 until December also did not lead to good results in terms of console sales. Compared with 2023, all hardware saw a decline in sales, with Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch dropping to 38% and PS5 to 18%. 2024 annual hardware revenue generated stayed at $4.9 billion, 25% less than from 2023.
So, we can conclude that Sony did well in the console market with its new console, whereas the current-gen Xbox series failed to deliver what was expected; hence, the last-gen proved a good one for fans.
Sony also launched the PS5 worldwide in 2020, and PS5 has sold 71 million units to date. Moreover, the pro version is also on the market, and it was launched on November 7, 2024. PS5 Pro has sold over 4 million units to date.
On the other hand, Xbox Series has sold over 30 million units as of October 2024 and Microsoft has not displayed any further updates. Microsoft is making Gamepass games collection vast progressively as an aim to stabilize Xbox in the hardware side.
So, it’s worth waiting to see how Microsoft handles the hardware sales issue of Xbox.
