Crux of The Story
- Dynasty Warriors Origins hack-and-slash combat mechanics were toned a bit higher to create an immersive experience.
- The producer instructed developers to Go and Kill The player, which means stepping up the difficulty of the title.
- However, to create balance for accessibility, it was not toned too high to make it a punishing game.
Dynasty Warriors Origins is a new and interesting addition to the hack-and-slash genre dominated priorly by the likes of Diablo, Devil May Cry 5, Bayonetta, Nier Automata, and others. Released a few days prior on January 21, it has quickly hailed as one of the best releases of the year.
However, today, an interesting insight into the game’s development was revealed in an interview with PlayStation Blog via Automaton Media. The producer, Tomohiko Sho, instructed the development team to go and Kill The Player.
The producer explained in the interview that means to create a bar high of the difficulty, which will immerse players in getting a realistic feel of the battle of The Romance of the Kingdoms. This will not only aim to survive a warlord but also instruct soldiers to kill the warlord.
It was decided from the planning stage, so I told the development team and the director, “This time, you have to kill the players” (laughs). Not only warlords but also soldiers are desperate to survive on the battlefield, so it is important to have a sense of realism that is enough to kill the player

However, the game is not a souls-like one that lies down players to their knees when facing a formidable boss. So, the developers made it in a way to allowed new players to enjoy battles instead of feeling a punishment and also difficult enough to get a sense of accomplishment after defeating enemies.
That said, Dynasty Warriors Origins has proven itself in every element, as it was praised for its combat, storytelling, gameplay, and other elements. It was even the highest-rated game in the entire franchise. Prior to its release, it dominated the Steam charts, and even now, it has a decent number of players on SteamDB.
Nevertheless, the game sales figures will be an interesting metric to see. So, it’s worth waiting to get its sales performance.
