While 2K already announced Borderlands 4, which is set to release September 23, 2025, the subsidiary of Gearbox Software, Gearbox Studio Quebec, has posted a job listing that reveals some interesting details of its upcoming project. Gearbox is now developing a new third-person shooter franchise, and the first game of this franchise is in development.
This was figured out when we found a Senior Gameplay Programmer job listing for GearBox Studio Quebec. This listing says, “Gearbox Studio Quebec is looking for someone capable of implementing gameplay features at the heart of the first project of a new franchise”.

So, this clearly mentions that the studio is bringing a whole new franchise. Elsewhere, in the job listing, there is a prerequisite of experience in third-person shooter titles, which suggests that this new franchise of games will be third-person shooter, unlike Borderlands, which is first-person.
There’s also a mention of multiplayer development, which means that the first title of the new franchise will also have multiplayer mode apart from the campaign, or it is possible that there will be co-op multiplayer. Like all the latest titles, this project will also use Unreal Engine 5 for its development.
That said, Gearbox already has a third-person shooter franchise, Brothers in Arms, so it could leverage the experience of it and incorporate elements into this new franchise. It’s worth waiting to see whether this new franchise will have action-adventure titles or release role-playing games.
All in all, currently, the all eyes on 2K upcoming projects: Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country. Both are releasing this year, with Borderlands 4 on September 23, and Mafia: The Country’s exact release date remains to be known. However, it is slated for Q3, 2O25.
