Crux Of The Story
- AMD’s new GPU RX 8000 will be the last RDNA architecture as a new report suggests that it will be replaced by UDNA
- UDNA will power PS6 and AMD Radeon RX 9000 series
- The UDNA-based GPUs will start production in Q2 2026.
AMD powers its GPUs with RDNA architecture, which is also found in gaming handhelds and PlayStation. While it is reported that the next-gen RDNA 4 GPUs will debut in early 2025 in the Radeon RX 8000 series, it appears that this will be the last tenure for the RDNA architecture. Now, new reports suggest that AMD is shifting to UDNA architecture.
A leaker, Zhangzhonghao, on the Chinese tech forum Chiphell, posted intriguing information about AMD’s future plans. According to him, there will be no RDNA 5, and AMD will utilize new UDNA architecture in the upcoming Radeon RX 9000 series. Furthermore, team Red will enter mass production of these UDNA-based GPUs by Q2 2026, which means that RDNA 4 will only be sustained for a year. What’s more interesting is that UDNA will unify RDNA and CDNA, creating GPUs for both gaming and enterprise domains.
Moreover, AMD AI GPUs MI 300 successor MI 400, which has already been announced, releasing in 2025 under CDNA Next, will be rebranded as UDNA.
While the new PS5 PRO utilizes RDNA 4, Sony’s next-gen console, PlayStation 6, will use new AMD UDNA architecture. However, its not decided which CPU will paired with the GPU, with Zen 4 and Zen 5 the options for consideration.
Meanwhile, Sony’s upcoming handheld will also use AMD hardware; however, the leaker does not specify which architecture the device will have. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s highly rumored Xbox handheld is choosing between AMD and Qualcomm for its upcoming handheld.
Although the leaker has a history of accurate information, still take this information with a grain of salt, as it may not be 100 percent true.
Nevertheless, the AMD 7000 series didn’t perform much against competing with Nvidia, so it’s worth waiting for the new RX 8000 series, which is expected to feature better ray tracing performance and AI capabilities.
Sony’s new PS5 PRO also uses the same RDNA 4 architecture and has been seen performing better in ray tracing and AI PSSR upscaling, so the RX 8000 will also be better in those areas.
